A portrait capturing warmth and character with expressive brushwork and soulful presence.
Tia Melita
Acrylic on canvas, 50 × 40 cm, 2024
This portrait in abstract realism is a tribute to my beloved aunt, who passed away in 2024 after a brief battle with cancer. Painted in acrylics, Tia Melita captures both her gentle sweetness and her zest for life. She loved to dance, to travel, to savor good food—and whenever I hear Funky Town, her favorite song from the 70s, I am carried back to the Portuguese club in Vereeniging, South Africa, where she brought such joy and laughter into our family’s life.
This was my first attempt at abstract realism, and it became more than a painting: it is a celebration of spirit, of warmth, and of the light she left behind.
