Hello, I’m Teresa

I paint under the name Teresa Canada, using my maiden name as my artist signature.

I didn’t begin painting until later in life. At the age of 52, a visit to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam left a deep impression on me and eventually led me to pick up a brush myself.

The Beginning

During that visit there was also an exhibition by a younger artist titled Painting as a Last Resort. The idea behind it stayed with me and made me think about how powerful painting can be as a way of expressing what words sometimes cannot.

My first painting, Summer Forest, was created while we were living in the Netherlands. When people later told me it reminded them of the Keukenhof gardens, I realised how much joy and atmosphere a painting can bring into a space.

Life Journey

I was born and raised in South Africa and have since lived in Angola, Portugal, the Netherlands, and now Switzerland. Each place has shaped the way I see colour, atmosphere, and the small details that make a scene memorable.

Some paintings are inspired by places I’ve lived or travelled to, while others come from images or scenes that simply caught my attention and stayed with me.

The Turning Point

When we later moved to Switzerland, I stopped painting for a while. Life had become heavy and I lost some of the confidence I had when I first started.

Then one day, standing on the bridge in Brugg and looking across the Aare River, something shifted.

I realised that I shouldn’t let the words of others dim something that brings me joy. I love to paint, and I decided to begin again.

That moment became the painting Cityscape Brugg over Aare.

My Paintings

My work includes landscapes, nature scenes, and other images that moved or inspired me.

Each painting begins with something that caught my attention — a place, a moment, or a feeling that stayed with me long enough to become a painting.

Painting is both calming and joyful for me, and I hope the finished piece brings warmth and character into the space where it lives.

I believe that each painting eventually finds the person it was meant for.

Milestones

  • Netherlands — beginnings (2024): First painting, Summer Forest, inspired by Dutch gardens.

  • Brugg, Switzerland — renewal (June 2025): Painted Cityscape Brugg over Aare, choosing again to let my light shine.

  • Today (2025): Works like Red Deer reflect my evolving style, blending nature and story with a sense of calm suited to Swiss interiors.

Approach & Materials

I work mainly with acrylic and oil paints on stretched canvas.

Many of my paintings begin with an image, memory, or scene that stayed with me. From there I build the painting gradually, layering colour and adjusting the composition as it develops.

I use artist-quality materials, and each finished painting is sealed with a protective varnish and signed by me.

Original works are carefully packaged and shipped from Switzerland and include a certificate of authenticity.

An Invitation

For me, creativity isn’t about perfection or comparison — it’s about courage. The simple act of picking up a brush and letting something new take shape has been transformational in my own life.

I hope that my paintings bless others in the same way. Each piece carries its own voice, and I believe it will speak to the one it was meant for — that moment of knowing, this is mine, I was meant to have it.

From my brush to your home, may these works bring peace, beauty, and the reminder to let your light shine.

With love,
Teresa
